UPRT Real Life Saves

APS UPRT has been credited with saving hundreds of lives as a result of employing the learned Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) techniques by pilots across many sectors of aviation. This page takes you through a few of the documented stories of real life saves by APS graduates…

The first two events feature major global airlines whose pilots have been trained in UPRT by APS trained subject matter experts. While major airline crashes do not happen often, they do occur, and Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I) has been the primary cause for many decades. In aircraft upset situations pilots use prevention and recovery skills developed in a full UPRT program more often then we realize.

Airline Saves Due to APS UPRT

In this first video, watch as Captain Brad Bennetts describes how the crew used skills developed in UPRT to handle an Airbus A340 upset event:

In the next scenario, Brian Simms, Delta Air Lines UPRT Subject Matter Expert, describes the impact UPRT has had on their actual flight operations as well as two stories showing the real world benefits of UPRT.

Upset Recovery Stories of Life-Saving Corporate, Military and Owner Pilots

While upset recovery training at the airline level has allowed pilots to save many lives at a time, upset events are more common for professional corporate or military pilots and owner/operators, making UPRT critical in case of rare but generally fatal upset events. Following are few of the accounts we have received from professional or owner pilots.

APS grad Michael Smith-Wheelock describes in this video how the training he learned at APS kicked in instinctually, allowing him to recover from an unexpected upset during a tailwheel checkout:

Next, professional pilot Dave Newland, a Global/Challenger pilot, explains how his upset training kicked in to allow him to recover from a wake vortex incident:

Last, read this story sent in by a US Army pilot who survived an ice-induced airplane upset using his training from APS:

While Loss of Control In-flight is rare, it is almost always fatal, and these are just a few of the many accounts we have heard over the years detailing events where Upset Prevention and Recovery Training has helped pilots bring everyone home safely. At APS we have tested our UPRT programs over decades of training thousands of pilots. Working with industry experts and regulatory agencies we have assisted in developing guidance for UPRT that is highly effective and results in resilient skills. Practical skill development must be done properly over sufficient time and an adequate number of flights to insure skills kick in when an unexpected situation is encountered months, or even years after training.
