Extreme Fear – Bombardier Safety Standdown 2016

Extreme FearThe presentation on Extreme Fear by APS president Paul BJ Ransbury at the 2016 Bombardier Safety Standdown is for everyone. We all have fundamentally the same mental and physical resources available to us in a crisis, yet our responses to the identical stimuli in identical conditions can be vastly different. But why? What makes a hero? What allows some people to perform at exceptional – some would say impossible – levels of performance in life-threatening situations and survive while most others would surely perish?

Extreme Fear Investigation

Extreme Fear, based largely on the book EXTREME FEAR by Jeffrey Wise and the personal experiences of Mr. Ransbury, takes the audience through startle, stress, fight, flight and fear from conceptual to technical to practical. Starting with a layman’s approach to establishing high level, yet modern psychophysiology constructs within our brain, the presentation isolates two levels of mental activities that we can influence. Tangible practical strategies are presented that can give us control–right now–so we can be more aware, capable and knowledgeable in a diversity of crises. The presentation closes with discussion of Mastery–the pinnacle of mental, physical and psychological preparation and conditioning–a state of existence we all have within our grasp within virtually any discipline we chose to pursue.
Paul BJ Ransbury is the president, founder, owner and a chief instructor at Aviation Performance Solutions (APS), a global training organization that specializes in developing solutions to aviation’s most lethal threat to air safety: Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I). APS’ revolutionary approach to providing airplane Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) for pilots to overcome LOC-I is, in a very substantial way, founded on its ability to embed skills, disciplines and strategies that pilots can actually access in a life-threatening crisis. After years of implementing, assessing and evolving the practical applications of techniques and strategies revealed in this seminar, the presentation on Extreme Fear is immensely practical. Not one single technique, strategy or measure to overcome fear is unique to pilots or even aviation. Once again, this presentation is for everyone.
Aside: For those wondering how these principles are applied in UPRT, please have a look at the APS article titled Required Intensity in Airplane Upset Training.
